RALLY OF CHARISMA AND JESSE JACKSON - USE YOUR CHARISMA FOR GOOD!

When I was young, I was fortunate enough to see Jesse Jackson give a charismatic rally at my school.  My school was in a predominantly white and affluent neighborhood.  We were all packed into the huge gymnasium and then onto one of the multiple bleachers. This occurred at a time when people thought Jesse would become the first black president. Jesse was able to make everybody "go to church" , vibing Southern black Baptists, with many people saying "Preach!" or "Yes, Jesse!" each time he said, "Up with Hope, Down with Dope!"  He called people down to repent or renounce drugs and alcohol.  People walked down to meet him on or near the stage, crying and hoping to receive forgiveness.

It may seem a bit over-the-top now, but it still remains as one of the most powerful memories of my childhood: people of different ethnicities and cliques, coming together because of a noble ideology.   They bought into the message and it may have changed lives.  I know it reinforced my resolve not to be an underage drinker and I have definitely stayed away from drugs.

I have reached out to another powerful man to do a rally at a school that I deal with now.  I want him to use his charisma for good.  I reached out to him directly and to the people around him, hoping he would see my detailed ideas as plausible and wonderful!  If he could get our students to focus on the world of technology and desire to become creators, instead of spectators, then it would be worth it!

If you have a gift of charismatic word in the name of positivity, please use it to help others. If you can reach one person, it's worth it!

CARRIE FISHER - GOODNIGHT, SWEET PRINCESS

The original Star Wars trilogy was the best!  As a young girl, I was obsessed with the franchise.  Carrie Fisher was the centerpiece: a strong, defiant woman who represented women in the real world fighting to take positions of power which they deserved. How wonderful was it to see her again in the last Star Wars which finally brought back the bravado and ambiance of the originals?  Well, she didn't leave without making a noticeable comeback, including leaving a new memoir. Thanks, Carrie.  Goodnight!

George Michael, Michael Jackson, and Whitney Houston -Music Barrier Breakers

 In the late 80's, music was still segregated racially.   Basically, African Americans did soul and R and B.  White people sang rock. However, three people came along to challenge these notions.

The leader, Michael Jackson, got MTV  to change its policy about what music it would play due to the overwhelming popularity of MJ  and Thriller.  Then Whitney Houston appeared with the overarching appeal and popularity of her pop ballads for all races.  Then George Michael's "brother-from- another-mother" soulful, dulcet tones broke apart the remaining rubble.  

These people were singing what they wanted to sing. It wasn't about race, it was about music. That's what it should be about.  As a singer/songwriter, I know that I write what my soul moves me to write, whether it be jazz, pop, electronica, etc.  What comes out, comes out and I and everybody has the right to express themselves in the way they see fit.  Thank you trailblazers.  RIP.

SOOTHING LETTERS - TIM COOK AND HADI PARTOVI- CALMING YOUR FLOCK

I TOOK A BREAK BECAUSE THIS ELECTION THING TOOK ME FOR A LOOP!

Well, the day of uncertainty is almost upon us: Donald Trump will be sworn in as president. My feelings of anxiousness are creeping back up, feelings made even more intense knowing some of the cabinet picks and their histories.  It makes me think of what I call “soothing” letters that some tech company leaders issued and that I put on my site: Hadi Partovi and Tim Cook. 

At first, I was a little surprised that they felt they needed to put out such letters, and then I felt sad because I realized that more company leaders should have done this action. You see, in New York City, it was disturbingly quiet the next day. I could see people on public transportation visibly numb.  It was so scary and disheartening.  Then when all the traffic and commotion started because Trump was at Trump Tower and needed a lot of security and protection, which garnered traffic jams and disruptions.  Was this a signal of things to come?

I shouldn’t have been so shocked because the fact is that my experience working in the tech sector and that of my friends has been a positive one because the companies seem to follow a path of inclusion and diversity.  It was the first time in my life in which I worked somewhere that had a variety of people in a variety of different, high/well- paying positions. There was respect shown to all. It seemed as though merit was the only ticket you needed to enter.  I loved my days in that world.  I really felt appreciated as a human being.

I think now, more than ever, we need more soothing letters. Heads of companies and heads of families, talk to your flock and try to quell their fear and nervousness.  There may be strange times ahead or maybe nothing new or something in between.

Be strong America.  Be strong world.

GIRL ON THE TRAIN - YES! YES! GET TO THE STATION QUICKLY!

My previous post about the movie discusses the plot. This article is just about my rating of the movie and the performances.......


Wow!  I really enjoyed girl on the train.  There were some changes from the book, but it was very good.  The whole theater was enraptured by the movie.

The ending was especially, well, fitting!

I didn't know what to expect, except that Luke Evans would be awesome as usual.  No matter how big his part is, he is gripping.  For his performance alone, it was worth the $20 New York film price!

The one who really blew me away was Emily Blunt.  Holy Cow!  She really dug deep and let it all explode in a very crafty and nuanced performance.  I am now a fan!

Justin Theroux is the perfect creep!  I'm sure he's not like that with his real wife, Jennifer Aniston, but if I were her, I would keep my eyes open for a few nights after seeing this performance.

Kudos to the director who was able to evoke such wonderful performances. Thanks, Tate Taylor.

Girl on the Train - It's finally here!!!!!!!

Well, Dearies:

The Girl on the Train is finally arriving in the station on October 7, 2016.

As I'm sure you know, I have a mild interest in one of its stars, Luke Evans, actor extraordinaire!  He can do anything.  So, I can't wait to see him in the role of Scott Hipwell, the husband of the girl who is being watched from the train.  Megan, the nanny, is his wife, and the "real" Megan is no bowl of cherries. 

She is being watched by the star Emily Blunt who plays Rachel.  She watches Megan and her husband, believing they are the ideal couple.  She needs the distraction because she herself had a disastrous marriage to Tom, who is played by Justin Theroux. She's still obsessed with him. However, she finds out that everything you see is not the whole truth!

This movie looks so good!  As soon as I saw the trailer a few months ago, I knew that this was a hit!

MY NEW FAVE PERFUME BY ONE OF MY FAVE SINGERS - BY INVITATION BY MICHAEL BUBLE!

I know what you're thinking: Another celebrity perfume!  Give me a break!

I assure you that I thought the same thing, but I am always willing to try something new, especially when it's by a talent like Michael Buble.

His new fragrance is called By Invitaiton and I am happy that I came to this party!

It's very sweet, definitely. So, if you don't like vanilla then try another fragrance.  Having said that, there is much more to this scent.  As per site "Now Smell This", here are the notes:

 By Invitation is a crisp floral oriental fragrance. The fragrance starts with light, sparkling top notes of red fruits and bergamot then develops its heart notes of lily of the valley, elegant rose, wild jasmine and spicy peony. QUICK POST! - TYRANT ON FX - BARRY IS CHANGING!

BARRY AL-FAYEED - TYRANT

 (PLAYED BY ADAM RAYNER)

When Tyrant started it was hinted that the title did not refer to the main character's brother or father, who became dictators of the fictional country in the Middle East called Abuddin, but to Barry himself.  Well now that theory is an actuality.

Barry has decided to declare war on the Caliphate. He wants justice for his daughter who was killed by Ihab Rashid, who is now the leader of the Caliphate. Molly is back and egging him on with a vengeance to get Ihab. 

Ihab really wants Barry dead now, too,  because in an attempt to kill Rashid and any other followers, he killed the now former leader instead and now Ihab, who was the number two guy. is the boss.  He solidified his power by shooting a dissenter among his cabinet in front of the whole team.  He allowed his former bride-to-be to become a martyr and blow herself up for the cause. The sad part about this situation is that after the bomb didn't blow up when she pushed the buttons a few times, she reconsidered her plan.  As she was walking out of the hotel, she suddenly blew up!

Barry has decided to have a curfew for the people of Abuddin. He's given the military more autonomy to round up people who they suspect are committing treason or dissenting in an unpleasing way, including religious worshipers.  His "interim" government is restricting more and more of the freedoms of the people.  Then, he decided to suspend the elections until the war against the Caliphate is done.  This decision caused dissension among all of the political candidates and his close associates, including Leila, Jamal's former wife, Barry's best friend, Fauzi, and from his mistress, Daliyah.

Barry used to be a proponent of democracy at all costs. But now, he is becoming what he swore he wouldn't become... his father and brother!  Things are getting really tense in Abuddin.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT ON FX!

LOOKING FOR A NEW SCENT? TRY BAMBOO BY GUCCI!

I was looking for a new scent.  I wanted something strong. I wanted something that was a mix of sweet and musky.  I found it.  It's called Bamboo by Gucci!

It has a mix of Tahitian vanilla, sandalwood, floral notes, and orange blossom.  All of those scents together sound and smell so delicious!

It's not a scent that announces you when you walk in, but it grabs a bystander once they stand next to you or pass by you.  I've received so many compliments, even when at the pool.  That chlorine couldn't overpower the seduction of this scent!

So if you are feeling seduced by this description, then...TRY IT!!!!!

Ramen in Upper Manhattan Washington Heights -Tampopo!

I was looking for a delicious ramen place. I wondered why all the places were in 125th Street and below, but none for Upper Manhattan.  Many people I know in Upper Manhattan love fine ramen dishes, but it was a pain to always have to travel out of their neighborhood.  

Then one day I saw this guy on the train with a noodle restaurant shirt.  I asked if they served ramen and he said, "Definitely!"

So he told me his restaurant was called Tampopo Ramen on Bennett Avenue.  My friend and I went right away. It was a small establishment filled with big, flavorful food.  We both had ramen.  Her ramen is pictured at the top and it was vegetarian.  My dish had chicken.  Both dishes were fantastic!  Deep unctuous authentic broth, garlic, mushrooms, boiled egg, and a sumptuous bed of ramen filled our bowls and delighted our taste buds. 

If your mouth is watering, then...TRY IT!!!!!!

MUST HAVE CONDIMENT - GARLIC AIOLI!

One of my favorite burger places is right down the street from me.  I go to this restaurant for many reasons: 1) the hamburgers are nice and juicy and 2) it's one of the very few places that serves garlic aioli. 

The aioli adds a certain delicious unctuousness to the burger.  The creamy garlic brings the burger or any other sandwich to another level.  I even add it to my salad when at this restaurant.  It blends in perfectly with the chicken, vegetables, and greens.

It uses are only limited by one's imagination.  It's a wonderful condiment for home, for hot and cold dishes.  One of the best versions of this condiment is Delouis' Sauce Aioli (see above).  I bought it at Zabar's, which is a fabulous gourmet store in New York City. You can also find more choices on Amazon.com.

TYRANT'S NEW SEASON! - YIKES!!!! (WARNING - SPOILER ALERTS IF YOU HAVEN'T WATCHED UP TO THIS POINT!)

WELL, HOW MANY MAIN CHARACTERS CAN YOU KILL OFF IN THE BEGINNING OF THE SEASON?!!!

Well, according to Tyrant, a lot!

We have lost the hottie and illegitimate son of Jamal (the evil, maniacal,former dictator who was shot), General Sayeed.  Why or why would you get rid of  this sexy character played so well by Keon Alexander.  He was breathing new life into the series.  Before him, in the very beginning of the season, Nusrat, the ostracized wife of Jamal's legitimate son, Ahmed, was hung by a powerful servant of the Al-Fayeed's and some cronies.  He told Jamal's wife, Leila, that it was his job to "anticipate" her wishes, which shocked even this scheming matriarch.

After Nusrat's death, somebody (well, something, Nusrat's diary) finally told Ahmed what happened to make her so unhinged, beginning on their wedding night and until her death:  His father, Jamal, violated her during the wedding celebration and she couldn't bring herself to tell Ahmed.  Every time she saw Jamal, it tore at her soul.   She also knew that Jamal had her father killed.  Then when she miscarried and Ahmed's parents wanted to throw her away, she totally snapped and decided to bring her own brand of justice, which was to shoot and kill Jamal.  She injured him badly, but he didn't die.  Upon learning this information, Ahmed went to the hospital and decided not to give his father his kidney to save him, but instead he decided to smother him with a pillow.  So, now, evil Jamal finally got his due: death at the hands of the son he loved.

You think we're finished?  NO!  One more death had to happen and this one was definitely a surprise. Ihab Rashid, who was saved by Barry, minus his arm, is still out for revenge.  He wanted to kill Barry's wife, Mollie.  Mollie was in her motorcade with their daughter Emma.  Ihab Rashid had organized an ambush, but they were only able to get the daughter.  When a rescue plan for Emma failed, Ihab decided that in front of their infrared cameras that he would dole out his justice and stabbed Emma in the stomach.  Now, Emma is dead, at least that's what it looks like.  She was pretty lifeless and Barry and Mollie were screaming!

Whew!  Are you tired?  Does all this mayhem mean that this is the last season or are they making room for new story lines, like the blossoming romance between Leila Al-Fayeed (Moran Atias) and the American general, played by Chris Noth?  Stay tuned.

Nice, France Attack - Why??!!

I went to Nice, France when I was in high school.  It was so beautiful and serene: beautiful , wonderful people, beautiful buildings and views of the water.   It was such a happy place and the memories filled me with such joyous feelings.

I am sure that I am not the only one who has felt these emotions about this place.  These types of emotions drew people to this place.  To me, it seemed safe from the kind of attack that occurred on this Bastille Day.  Those feelings were taken away from the 80 that perished and those that survived and those of us that longed to go back to this once happy place.  But we as humans are resilient.  We can't go back and make it go away, so we must go forward and keep positive and keep love in our hearts.  We must pray for all, even the misguided.   We must not lose our joy or hope for mankind!

Bai Antioxidant Infusion Drinks -My Review

My assistant Debbie and I decided to try the low calorie Bai drinks.  Our big concern about low calorie drinks is the after taste that many of them have.  We heard that these drinks seemed to fare better in that department.

We tried three flavors: Ipanema Pomegranate, Costa Rica Clementine, and Molokai Coconut.  Our results in terms of best taste and least after taste were Molokai Coconut, Costa Rica Clementine, and Ipanema Pomegranate.  We really enjoyed the coconut flavor.  It had a strong, rich coconut essence and no hint of after taste.  It was quite pleasing.  The robust flavor of the Clementine almost made up for the after taste.  Our least favorite was the Pomegranate which had a strong after taste for us.  

We both decided that in terms of the first two, they were worth drinking because of the calories we saved and the amount of satisfaction we received.  We even mixed the first two together and it was quite a pleasant combination.

So if you are curious, like we were curious, then....TRY IT!!!!!!!

TYRANT SEASON 3 - WOW!!!! WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN NOW?!!!!

Hello, fellow Tyrant lovers.  The new season is coming July 6, the third season to be exact.  I would like to recap what happened in Season 2, just briefly to get your appetites revving again!!!

So, I’ll start at the end because I have seen some reviews and I’m not sure they are totally correct.  Just like John Snow from Game of Thrones, even though we see Jamal, the worst Tyrant ever, “dying”, is he really dead?  I read a recap review that said that he was, but no one said that at the end of the scene. Some characters just wished and believed that the bullet that Nusrat (the wife of Jamal’s son Ahmed) killed him, but Barry seemed to act as though he could save him and then it was the end. (Update: As I was writing this article, I found the Season 3 trailer and I am right, Jamal is not completely dead.)

Ok, now, in the beginning of Season 2, Barry Al Fayeed, an Americanized member of the Al Fayeed royal family, was in jail because his coup attempt against his brother failed and he was to be killed for treason.  We see a man being hung and assume it is Barry because we can’t see his face and we were told that it was Barry. The truth was that Jamal couldn’t face killing his brother, so he had another prisoner executed, then had Barry taken to the desert to die on his own.  However, Barry was found by some villagers and brought back to health.

Barry then became a freedom fighter against an overly zealous insurgent militant group that was against the Al Fayeed government and was rounding up members from dissatisfied small town folk, making it seem glamorous as they pillaged and killed many people, rivaling the evil of only Jamal himself.

 Part of the reason they were able to get many members was because they blamed Jamal for a chemical attack that was actually done secretly by his uncle Tariq, who led the military.  When Jamal found out what his uncle had done, he killed him with his own hands. This was justified, especially since Tariq did the same thing to Jamal’s and Barry’s father many decades ago when he ran the country. The father’s reputation never rebounded and the father never told the truth because of his loyalty to his family.

So, Barry becomes the freedom fighters’ leader, Khalil, but it was not known at first by his followers that he was a member of the Al Fayeed family and  the brother of Jamal, and the original heir to the throne, as per his father’s original wishes.  Barry and his son worked with the rebels.  Barry found out by accident that his son was helping the rebels and his son Sammy found out by accident that Barry was Khalil.

Barry devises a plan to beat back the new insurgent group and enlists the aid of an unlikely ally:  the illegitimate son of Jamal, who is now the new head of the military.  Without getting too involved in this part of the story, Jamal becomes paranoid over this allegiance (as well as many other things) and has this son thrown into jail as well.  

At the end, all ends well when the son is allowed to do his duty and Barry’s plan with the help of the military goes through and the insurgents are defeated.  Jamal is forced by his wife, Leila, and legitimate son, Ahmed, to resign for all the sins he has committed, which also included killing his own mother accidentally because he was trying to kill someone else due to one of his paranoid delusions. 

Jamal is allowed to make a speech. You even believe for one moment that he will not resign, but then… Nusrat shoots him!  She needed to get justice for him violating her on her wedding night and for killing her father. On the other hand, this at first innocent and nice girl has been forced into a life altering position. The Al Fayeed’s ruined her life and now she took her chance to get some sort of revenge.  They show Jamal dying, but no one said he was actually dead.

Although, he did look pretty wounded, you never know. The fact is this character was very compelling, charismatic, and full of surprises.  He was the J.R. Ewing character of Tyrant: You loved to hate him (This is a reference from the show Dallas for those of you that don’t know.) 

It also raises the questions: Is Barry now the leader of the country and for how long?  Is he going to become the Tyrant that has been hinted at since the beginning or will he go back to America?  Is he going to have an affair with the village woman with whom he shared a special bond during the freedom fight and who he visited secretly without his wife, Molly, knowing? Will Sammy’s sexuality complicate matters and cause danger for him in this very conservative world? Where is this story going now?  Only one way to find out.

OBSESSED!!!!!! JO MALONE'S NECTARINE BLOSSOM AND HONEY COLOGNE!!!!!!

I don't go for subtle scents, but this Jo Malone Nectarine Blossom and Honey cologne is fantastic!!!! I am obsessed and transfixed. The subtle notes of peach, nectarine, and plum are magical to my nose.  I feel like I'm in a forest of fruit.  I also smell apricot, although that is not cited as one of the scent notes. 

It's not loud.  I wear it alone or mixed with my stronger scents to give them new life.  It's a happy scent.  People should feel joy around you when they smell it.  Sometimes I just spray it on myself to feel the rush of pleasure and happiness it gives me. It's addictive!!!!

Summertime Refreshers

Summer is approaching and what is more refreshing than an ice cold drink during a hot day? Hydrating yourself is especially important during the summer, but just drinking plain water all day may be too boring for some and reaching for drinks like, soda, juice, and sweet tea may seem like a good choice until you realize that ONE bottle has more added sugar than the daily recommendation!

If you want to stay hydrated and healthy without giving up flavor here are some recipes you might want to try. You can experiment with ingredients making one glass or make a large pitcher to share with friends.

Ingredients:

Water or Club Soda
Fruit: Lemon, Lime, Cucumber, Strawberry, Watermelon, Raspberry, etc
Optional Sweetener: Stevia, Agave, Honey
Directions 2 Options:
1. Choose your fruit and place in a large pitcher.
-Add in either water or club soda covering the fruit and filling the pitcher.
-Chill in the fridge or add ice.
-The longer you let the drink sit for the more flavored the water/club soda will be

2. Choose your fruit, muddle/squeeze/mash/blend the fruit to get the juice and flavor out. Muddling/Mashing can be done in a cup or bowl with any hard kitchen utensils, such as a fork or a wooden spoon.
-Add the mashed fruit into a cup or a pitcher. Drain or remove any seeds, rinds, or pulp if necessary.

-Add in either water or club soda, serve immediately or keep in the fridge.

Recipes and Delicious Combination Recommendation:

Cucumber Lemon Water-1Glass:
4-5 Cucumber Slices
1/2 Lemon Sliced or Squeezed
Add Ice, Water, and Enjoy!

Strawberry Lime Club Soda-Pitcher (2 Qt):
1-2 cups Strawberries Sliced (Blend or Mash)

2-3 Limes (Squeeze or Juice)
Add Club Soda, Stevia (optional), and Enjoy!
