THE DAVID MUIR EXPERIENCE - THANK YOU FOR HELPING AND INSPIRING KIDS!!!

Awhile ago, I did an article explaining and asking people to use their charisma for good. If you can use it to help people, please do it. People want to learn and grow.  Sometimes they need a spark to show them the right direction......

I do a Skype/Hangouts/FaceTime video  career and tech chat program with my students. I bring in top talent from different careers for my inner city kids, so the students can interview them and discover potential career paths and what type of technology is needed.  I turned to one of the brightest talents in television news...David Muir of ABC Nightly News.......

Since I was very young, my parents and I would watch the news which had it's superstars: Everyone wanted to join the venerated ranks of Cronkite, Brokaw, and Jennings. They were the news law.  You could believe what they said. They were no-nonsense.

My family would watch the local and national news during dinner. We would talk about the current stories and our daily events over our steak, mashed potatoes, and vegetables.  It was a necessary highlight of our day: News and gnosh!

So my standards are high for the news. As I have gotten older, I haven't had much time to watch television.  I have to DVR everything.  I never thought about using the DVR for the news until..

I saw David Muir.

Let's see how David stacks up in the newscaster superstar department: Handsome(Absolutely), Intelligent (Check), Commanding Voice and Poise (Check), but  what makes him unique........WARMTH!

You see, at first I thought: He seems a bit young to be on the news, but he looks at least 10 years younger than his real age! So, I gave him a chance. He has the look, but did he have the substance?

Then, after awhile, I realized what it was that drew me in: the warmth, the sincerity.  He doesn't seem pretentious on television or in person. He started his career "out and about" - on the scene reporting. So, he definitely also has "street" credibility.

His warmth fills the screen. He seems like someone that you've known for a long time and trust.  He's someone you'd like to know in real life. This is important because we live in difficult times and the news is where we go to find out what's happening and maybe, find hope. When he spoke with my students on Skype and in person, he showed that his compassion was real.  He really seemed to listen to the students and they were so thrilled and appreciative of what he was teaching and showing them.

The biggest reason I wanted my students to meet him was because David had a vision for his life ever since he was a little boy. He knew that he wanted to be a newscaster. He had such strength and conviction in his beliefs that he wrote to the local news station and said that he wanted a job in the news.  At the age of 13, he began working as an intern and later began working at the station. Many moves upward and beyond and he is the national news anchor for ABC News.

I wanted my students  to see what focus and determination looks like and what can happen if you believe and work hard for it.  I want them to understand that it is never too early to think about the path you need to take to achieve your goals. The interview went better than we expected because David allowed us to come the studio and watch a taping. Then he spoke with the students again and let them and their parents take a picture with him.

It was such a special experience all around!  This will be an experience that the students will never forget.  This story is something amazing that they will be able to tell for years ( and maybe even use on a college application!).  This experience may have even changed their lives

You know what else? Sometimes when he smiles during the newscast, I see that little boy who really wanted to work in the television news business.

Thank you, David!  Let's keep in touch!  You know how to contact me! :-)

Thanks, David Muir!

I want to give a shout out to David Muir for being so sweet by allowing my inner city kids to interview him by Skype. They were so thrilled that he took some time to talk to them.

MESSAGE FROM THE KING - A THRILLING MESSAGE YOU SHOULD WATCH ON NETFLIX STARRING LUKE EVANS AND CHADWICK BOSEMAN

One of the most intriguing and thrilling movies I have seen in a long time is on Netflix!  It’s called Message from the King. It’s about a man who comes to America to help his sister who left a message telling him that she is in big trouble in Los Angeles, California.  They came from a tough city from a country in Africa. As one character describes the town, “The murder capital of the world…”

We really don’t know the brother’s background other than that first introduction and that his name is Jacob, played by Chadwick Boseman, who will soon be seen as Black Panther in his own superhero movie. The main villain is played by the always scrumptious Luke Evans, hot off his Beauty and the Beast triumph.

What we quickly find out is that Jacob knows how to find information and how to get revenge.  The movie moves quickly from one murky, sleazy scenario to another.  Jacob begins to realize that maybe he didn’t know his sister at all.  She and her apparent “friends” are all sleazy users, ne’er do wells, and criminals.

Each step brings another shocking revelation until the huge climactic ending.  YOU MUST WATCH THROUGH TO THE VERY END TO FULLY UNDERSTAND THE PLAYERS IN THE MOVIE. Then you will say, “Oh, I get it!”

So, if you want a thrilling movie that makes you want to think and even want to watch it again to get all the clues….Then…..TRY IT!!!!

HOLLYWOOD MEN WE LOVE......BYUNG HUN LEE!!!!!!!

Byung Hun Lee is very famous in

South Korea, but he is becoming more famous in America.  While spending time in South Korea, I was made aware of this gorgeous and talented thespian.

You've seen him in Red 2, in the remake of the Magnificent Seven, G.I. Joe, and in the last Terminator Movie. He is smart and acclaimed as a top notch actor. In the movie Red 2, he showed his comedic talent as a very determined assassin. He is suave and debonair in interviews. If you want to see his physical offerings, you should watch G.I.. Joe 1 in which he "must" rip off the top part of his costume when he is slashed across the chest. I certainly didn't question the reasonableness of this part of the plot; I just enjoyed the view. I hope to see more of him in the future in more Hollywood movies.

If you think that some of his movies would be of interest to you then......TRY THEM!!!!!!!

RIPLEY'S BELIEVE IT OR NOT ODDITORIUM IN BALTIMORE

I visited the Baltimore Harbor this summer. It has sightseeing boats, restaurants, shops, and the Ripley's Believe or Not Odditorium, and much more.

I have always been curious about what oddities that you would find at these Ripley places that are in different locations around the world.  So, my sisters and I decided to take a chance and explore.

We saw many different things: one of the world's smallest cars, a mummy of a falcon, an exhibit of toothpick replicas of the Manhattan skyline and other famous places, a mirror maze, a 4D ride, a replica of some of the biggest people in the world in height and size, replicas of people with physical variations, like a 3-legged man, female Siamese twins, and many other curiosities.

The 4-D movie ride was fun and interesting.  You watch and become a part of cartoons that are shown.  The seats move and shake so that you are having the same experience as the characters on the screen.  In one movie, you are part of a high speed car race and in the other, you are part of the  Roadrunner and Coyote cartoon.   I think there is or was a similar ride in the Empire State Building, except the ESB used real footage instead of cartoons. We then went to have some scrumptious frozen custard at a place that had huge lines around it. The wait was worth it!

We would have taken a ride on the boats, but we  went to brunch for a few hours, so we ran out of time. We will have to go to the aquarium and cruise on some of the tour boats at another time.

It was a great day! So, if you want to have a low key day with lots of fun and/or funky stuff to do, then......TRY IT!!!!

YUMMY THAI IS VERY YUMMY!

I love Thai food. A place that has been around for a few years now is Yummy Thai in the Inwood neighborhood in upper Manhattan.

There are certain things that I must have at a Thai restaurant: pad thai with chicken or shrimp and thai iced tea.  They have both of those items and they are delicious!  I also love the ground chicken filled dumplings.  I ask for sides of sweet chili and peanut sauces.

Another dish I love is massumun curry which is made with avocado, onions, potatoes, and coconut milk.  I usually enjoy it, but when I received their version with beef, I did not like the beef.  This happened in its first year, so it may be worth trying again, but I stick with chicken and shrimp.

They have some great cheap drinks that are mostly between $5-$7.  I like the soju cocktail and the mojitos. Their drinks are made with sake and they are fantastic! They have a variety of flavors for their mimosas, including guava and passion fruit. Wow!

Everyone has their special likes at Thai restaurants, so the only way to figure out if this is a place for you is to come to this place and .........TRY IT!!!!!

The Carousel at Riverbank

One of the children designed creatures on the carousel at Riverbank State Park.

People love going to Riverbank State Park in Upper Manhattan!

It overlooks the Hudson and was built over a water treatment plant. There are so many things to do: indoor and outdoor swimming, fields for playing soccer or any other field sport, basketball courts, ice skating and roller skating facilities, playgrounds, sprinklers for people to run through, and wonderful open green spaces which are great if you're coming with a little picnic to listen to jazz.  It  is one of the most popular destinations in Manhattan.

There is a relatively new component that has been added to this wonderful place: a carousel. What's interesting about this carousel is that the horses have been replaced with creatures drawn by young children. They are whimsical and exciting. It's refreshing that such a project exists.

So, if you are as intrigued as I am then........TRY IT!!!!!!

ONE MORE THANKS FROM THE EXPRESSION AWARDS......TIM COOK

All of the award recipients at the Newseum Free Expression Awards in April deserved their awards. They protect freedom of expression and of life in their own ways.  However, one of the recipients sticks out to me because I know that his philanthropy has touched my life in a special way.

He has given technology to children that don't have a lot of access to it, particularly in school. It is vital for them to become as fluent as they can with this technology and even more important, for them to become the future creators of such technology - Things bigger and better than one could ever dream!

He has given them a gateway and hopefully, with the help of teachers, other guardians in their lives, and their own will power, they will achieve great things.

Thanks again, Tim!

Lori A. Calbert

UMM.....HEALTHCARE IS IMPORTANT, NOT A JOKE! PEOPLE'S LIVES ARE AT STAKE!

WHY WAS THE CONGRESS SO HAPPY THAT THEY PASSED A BILL TO REPEAL THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT?  WHY WERE THEY SO HAPPY THAT 24 MILLION PEOPLE WILL LOSE THEIR HEALTHCARE, INCLUDING CHILDREN, AND MANY MAY ALSO LOSE THEIR LIVES?!

WHY ARE THEY SO UNCARING AND CALLOUS WITH OTHER PEOPLE'S LIVES?  THE BIGGEST QUESTION IS WHY DO THEY WANT TO ANGER THEIR CONSTITUENTS WHO HAVE TOLD THEM THAT THEY WILL "REPEAL" THEM WHEN THE NEXT ELECTION COMES AROUND?

I'M SORRY, BUT THIS IS THE REPUBLICAN GOVERNMENT THAT PEOPLE HAVE FEARED WOULD COME TO PASS. THEY HAVE SHOWN THEIR TRUE COLORS AND NOBODY, NOT EVEN THE PEOPLE THAT VOTED FOR THEM, IS HAPPY.

HOPEFULLY THEIR SENATE COUNTERPARTS WILL GET THE PERIL THAT THEY ARE IN AND JUST HAVE SOME COMPASSION TO NOT LET THIS EVIL BILL GET THROUGH.  THE PROBLEM THAT NEEDS TO BE FIXED IS THROUGH THE GREEDY INSURANCE AND PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANIES.  TELL THEM TO KEEP THEIR COSTS DOWN AND STOP GOUGING THE CONSUMER.  THE PROBLEM IS NOT WITH THE BILL ITSELF. THE BILL DOES NOT REGULATE THE COST OF THE INSURER OR PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANIES.

SO, PUT CREDIT AND BLAME WHERE THEY ARE BOTH DUE!

GOD BLESS AND SAVE AMERICA!

In 2000, the Freedom Forum began plans to move its popular museum, the Newseum, from its location in Arlington, Virginia, across the Potomac River to downtown Washington, D.C.
One of the primary tools used by the Freedom Forum to champion the First Amendment, the original Newseum was closed on March 3, 2002, to allow the organization to concentrate on building a state-of-the-art, dazzling museum.
Led by founder Al Neuharth and a team of executives from the Freedom Forum, a landmark location at Pennsylvania Avenue and Sixth Street, N.W., was obtained. The Newseum board selected noted exhibit designer Ralph Appelbaum and architect James Stewart Polshek to work on the new project.
Highlights of the building design, which was unveiled in October 2002, include a façade featuring a “window on the world” which looks out on Pennsylvania Avenue and the National Mall while letting the public see inside to the visitors and displays. The front of the Newseum features the 45 words of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution etched into a 75-foot-tall tablet of Tennessee pink marble facing Pennsylvania Avenue.
The new museum opened its doors to the public to great fanfare on April 11, 2008.
Since opening, the Newseum has garnered outstanding reviews from media professionals, travel leaders, educators and hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the world and positioned itself as a leading champion of free expression in the world today.

ECHOES FROM THE TECH WORLD - TIM COOK'S NEW LETTER THAT SUPPORTS WHAT I ALREADY KNEW

In December, I wrote about the diversity of the tech world and how much I enjoyed it.  The ability to see a multi-cultural and respected work force was so exciting!

So, it was nice to see that my beliefs were supported by a letter that Tim Cook wrote to his staff in reaction to President Trump's immigration policy that caused quite a stir at places like JFK Airport in New York.  Here's what his letter had to say:

Team,
In my conversations with officials here in Washington this week, I've made it clear that Apple believes deeply in the importance of immigration -- both to our company and to our nation's future. Apple would not exist without immigration, let alone thrive and innovate the way we do.
I've heard from many of you who are deeply concerned about the executive order issued yesterday restricting immigration from seven Muslim-majority countries. I share your concerns. It is not a policy we support.
There are employees at Apple who are directly affected by yesterday's immigration order. Our HR, Legal and Security teams are in contact with them, and Apple will do everything we can to support them. We’re providing resources on AppleWeb for anyone with questions or concerns about immigration policies. And we have reached out to the White House to explain the negative effect on our coworkers and our company.
As I've said many times, diversity makes our team stronger. And if there’s one thing I know about the people at Apple, it’s the depth of our empathy and support for one another. It’s as important now as it’s ever been, and it will not weaken one bit. I know I can count on all of you to make sure everyone at Apple feels welcome, respected and valued.
Apple is open. Open to everyone, no matter where they come from, which language they speak, who they love or how they worship. Our employees represent the finest talent in the world, and our team hails from every corner of the globe.
In the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, "We may have all come on different ships, but we are in the same boat now."
Tim
