(Peter Luger
I have wanted to go to Peter Luger's forever! Since all that time ago that I set real roots in New York City, I always heard of Peter Luger's meat+. So, I went for lunch.
PL is found in a very unassuming part of Brooklyn. You can take the J or M to Marcy Avenue. If you walk toward the bridge when you get out, you will see a big wall that says, "Peter Luger" and then has an arrow pointing to a building across the street. Accept for the small writing of the name, you might walk past it if you didn't know what you were looking for.
The doorman is nice. As soon as he sees you approaching the door, he opens it. Inside there is a bar in the front and cash register. The next room has the seating. It, too, is very unassuming with wooden tables.
Of course, they have steak+. There were a few selections for one person. Quite a few were for two, but there was only one of me. I looked at the day's special. The beef+ option was chopped steak. So, I decided that if I was going to get chopped steak, I should go ahead and get the hamburger+.
I wanted a salad, too. Something to clear my palate before the big meal. I didn't realize how big the portions were. The salad+ I ordered was the iceberg lettuce with bacon, tomatoes, and blue cheese dressing. Now, you have to understand, when they say bacon, it's not the little bacon+ crisps that I thought I was going to get. They are actually chopped pieces from the "bacon" big slabs of what I would call top part of a ham! They were thick cuts that made this "side" salad a complete meal. Uh oh! I had already ordered the hamburger with the works!
My hamburger was a cheeseburger. I wanted swiss or cheddar, but PL only gives you American (see picture). I also ordered the fries which were crunchy and a little sweet. Quite yummy! Again, I ordered before I knew what their bacon was. So, I also ordered bacon for my burger. Holy cow! I could not even begin to finish another piece of bacon, so I took it home for my friend. That one slice was plenty for a huge guy like him.
The burger was good. It should be because it's made of the top quality meat that PL is know for. I would have enjoyed it more with different cheese, but it was good. I tried it with their house steak sauce which is a very fancy cross between sweet ketchup and a chutney. It was way too much food for me to finish, so I had it wrapped to go. I was so full!
If you go to PL, go on an emptly stomach so you can really enjoy your meal. If you add a salad, eat knowing that you must leave room for the rest of the meal.
If I go again, I am doing the steak with creamed spinach and fries. I saw many people getting the steak and spinach combination, so I think it must be a winner.
Ciao!
